H&W: Supreme Court Upholds Health Care Reform

Supreme Court Upholds Health Care ReformSupreme Court Upholds Health Care Reform: The Supreme Court ruled today that the individual mandate (one of the central provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or ACA) is constitutional. However, the Court did not sustain it as a command for Americans to buy insurance, but as a tax if they don’t.

The court also upheld the expansion of Medicaid to assist low income individuals in purchasing health insurance, but ruled that the federal government may not threaten the states that don’t comply with the loss of their existing funding. This essentially means that the Medicaid expansion is now optional for the states.
